February 2, 2011- I have now finished reading Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston. The book has 184 pages but the last 4 or 5 chapters are very quick reads. A lot happened since my last entry. Janie's first husband died and about 9 months after he died, she fell in love with a man named Tea Cake (awesome name, right?) and married him. She discovered that she hadn't been happy with her first husband, Joe, and she enjoyed working outside in the fields with Tea Cake more than working in a store or taking care of the house. Janie and Tea Cake worked in a place called the muck in the Everglades, after living there for around 2 a half years a hurricane hit. As Janie and Tea Cake were escaping the hurricane, a mad dog bit Tea Cake and he got very sick. He eventually went mad and tried to kill Janie, she had to kill him instead. Janie went to trial and was found not guilty and she moved back to Eatonville, where she had met Tea Cake. A reoccurring theme in this book is Janie's search to live life to the fullest. At first she married a man just to make her Grandma happy before she died. She left him after a few months and married Joe Starks, expecting to find a fun and exciting life as the wife of a rich man. When Joe died, she felt even more lost than before, she didn't like the life as a rich widow. She finally married Tea Cake out of love and enjoyed life to the fullest. The two of them earned their keep through the work of their own hands in the fields. She followed Tea Cake wherever he needed to go for work and she was happy until the day he died.
January 24, 2011- I am reading Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston. I have read to page 80 so far. This book tells the story of Janie Crawford, a negro girl born and raised on a farmhouse belonging to a white family. Her grandma has raised her here and she has no idea that she is "different" from the other children until a picture is taken of the children playing. As the story continues, Janie is hated at school for being treated like an equal by the white family causing her and her grandmother to move to a house of their own. Janie grows up to marry a man named Joe Starks and they move to a small sight completely full of black residents. The two of them work together to build the sight into a good sized town, in doing so they start to argue more and more. I have just gotten to the part where Joe, or Jody, is dieing from kidney failure. Janie Crawford is the main character. She is very pretty and a very good speaker. I like that her character is not afraid to fight to have her say buy I sometimes don't agree with how straight forward she is and I think she needs to learn to hold her tongue at times.
